About department

Department of Biology is one of the oldest theoretical departments at Masaryk University. It was established in 1919. The first chair of the Department Edward Babák is an author of the General Biology teaching concept for all medical faculties. Currently, the Department provides both theoretical and practical education of Medical Biology for Czech and International students. As a centre of excellent international biomedical research it also coordinates a PhD school in Biomedical Sciences.

The Head of Department, Prof. Slabý, was elected by the medical students as the Academician of the Year

The Head of the Department of Biology, Prof. Ondřej Slabý, has been elected Academician of the Year for preclinical teaching in a student poll organized by the Medical Students Association. The award ceremony occurred during the 26th Faculty of Medicine and Medical Students Association Representative Ball. Congratulations 😊.

The Werner von Siemens award was won by Kateřina Snopková with David Šmajs and doctoral student Veronika Kamenská

For the 26th time, the Werner von Siemens Prizes were awarded to the best students, young scientists and teachers. On Wednesday 13 March, the award for the best dissertation was presented to RNDr. Kateřina Snopková, Ph.D. and prof. MUDr. David Šmajs, Ph.D. from the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University.

Scientists at the Biology Department received two AZV grants this year

The Czech Health Research Council (AZV ČR) will support 2 new research projects of scientists from the Biology Department this year. Specifically, these are grant projects of Associate Professor Jiří Šána and Doctor Michaela Bosáková.
