Ph.D. program Biomedical Sciences

3 Specialized Tracks of Study

Several departments from the Faculty of Medicine, together with CEITEC PhD school, have united their efforts to create a stimulating educational and research environment. As such, our PhD students can benefit from deep expertise in three different specializations: Bichemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell and Tissue Morphology and Molecular Medicine.

> 25 Experienced Supervisors

The program supports an open-door approach that encourages dialogue between the PhD student and the supervisor. Supervisors are asked to continuously encourage the students to fulfill the tasks related to the studies and closely guide PhD student towards a successful doctoral defense.

> 40% Internationality

For researchers looking for new discoveries, a collaborative spirit is vital. Our program warmly welcomes young researchers from across the world. Currently, more then 25 % of our students are international, and we wish to increase this number over time.

General information

The long-term and well established PhD program in Medical Biology and Anatomy, Histology and Embryology in close cooperation with a CEITEC Ph.D. school and ICRC (The International Clinical Research Center of St. Anne's University Hospital Brno) established an innovative, interdisciplinary, fast-growing, and internationally-oriented PhD School in Biomedical Sciences.

The aim of the doctoral degree program is to train top experts in specialized scientific disciplines studied at the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University and a science centre CEITEC. At the same time, the program provides graduates with such an extensive knowledge of methodological approaches that their careers are not limited only to the field in which they write their PhD thesis. Graduates are ready for scientific careers in academic institutions as well as in companies with scientific background and in healthcare facilities and they can also work as specialist lecturers.

  • Currently there are more than 65 PhD students assigned to the PhD program

  • In general, more than 40 % of the PhD students are international of various nationalities (Italian, Latvian, Romanian, Indian, Spanish etc.)

FINANCIAL SUPPORT - The program requires that all PhD students have some means of financial support of min. 25 000 CZK per month. This is often a combination of various sources (grants, scholarship etc.)

GENERAL INFORMATION on the PhD studies at the Faculty of Medicine are summarized in an extensive guide that provides information on the study progression as well as practical information such as Health Insurance, University Sport Facilities, Transportation, ISIC card etc.

Handbooks for PhD Students

This handbook was put together to help you navigate your way around the PhD program in Biomedical Sciences. It describes the program´s structure and details on its specifics. May you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact the PhD program coordinator (bscoordinator@med.muni.cz).

Additionally, this handbook summarizes the rules and requirements of PhD studies at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University.

The Annual PhD Conference in Biomedical Sciences

The Annual PhD Conference in Biomedical Sciences brings together PhD students from different fields, offering a chance to present their research in front of their peers, supervisors and the Doctoral Board/Committee. The conference usually lasts three days, and all PhD students should actively participate (participation at the PhD conference is one of the degree requirements).

During the PhD conference, all PhD students present a poster. In addition to the poster, 3rd year students have to pass the doctoral state exam, while 2nd,4th and 5th year (or higher) students present their progress.

In 2021, the PhD conference was held for the first time among students of all three specializations following the idea "More people, more science & more fun!". Therefore, all students in the program take active part creating a team spirit, facilitating exchange of ideas and promoting communication between different departments.
