The PhD Programme in Biomedical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, in collaboration with CEITEC MU, is built around a research-first philosophy, training independent and creative researchers. PhD candidates focus primarily on their doctoral research projects, working in state-of-the-art laboratories on cutting-edge topics in life sciences and molecular medicine.

Doctoral training is supported by structured coursework, guidance from a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC), teaching opportunities, and internationally aligned degree requirements, with students presenting their work at the Annual PhD Conference in Biomedical Sciences.

All key aspects of the programme, including funding, supervision, and study requirements, are clearly described on these webpages, offering a transparent overview of the PhD journey.

Programme´s structure

The PhD program at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University brings together several departments of the Faculty and the CEITEC PhD School to create a stimulating educational and research environment. Students benefit from expertise across three specializations, each hosted in a different department, allowing access to diverse knowledge and resources.

The program is overseen by the Doctoral Board, while each specialization is guided by its own Doctoral Committee. Both boards are led by a Chair and include permanent and external members who ensure the quality and progression of the program.

Thesis Advisory Committee

The Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) is a key part of your PhD journey in Biomedical Sciences, designed to support your development and help you succeed. It brings together your supervisor and expert faculty members who provide unbiased feedback on your research progress, guidance on project strategy, and constructive advice along the way.

Established early in your studies and continuing throughout, the TAC gives you a trusted sounding board beyond your supervisor, encourages open discussion about your goals and challenges, and strengthens your scientific and professional growth. Explore all details about this mentoring program.

Annual PhD Conference in Biomedical Sciences

Every year, PhD students from across our biomedical sciences program come together for a PhD conference to share their research, exchange ideas, and connect with peers, supervisors, and members of the Doctoral Board.

This is more than just a requirement—it’s a unique opportunity to showcase your work, spark collaborations, and be part of a vibrant scientific community. Whether you’re presenting, networking, or learning from others, the conference is the perfect place to connect, inspire, and be inspired.

BIOTOP Seminars: Connecting Academia and Industry

Seemingly peculiar name “BIOTOP” stands for BIOtech Talks to PhD. In broad strokes, these seminars aim to bridge the gap between the academia and industry and present various career options in the field of Life Sciences. Invited guests are scientists who worked in academia but then decided to continue their research career in private sector companies either in Czech Republic or abroad.

The BIOTOP seminars are designed to support PhD students in exploring careers beyond academia. They highlight diverse industry opportunities, provide guidance on the skills needed for a successful transition, and offer practical workshops. Participants can also network with professionals and  receive advice on job searches and interviews.
