About department

Department of Biology is one of the oldest theoretical departments at Masaryk University. It was established in 1919. The first chair of the Department Edward Babák is an author of the General Biology teaching concept for all medical faculties. Currently, the Department provides both theoretical and practical education of Medical Biology for Czech and International students. As a centre of excellent international biomedical research it also coordinates a PhD school in Biomedical Sciences.

Treatment for melanoma works quickly, but for a short time. The discovery of the team from MU indicates where to go in the development of new drugs

Scientists from the Biology department at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University discovered new mechanisms controlling the division of tumor cells while studying skin melanomas. Their findings represent an important springboard for future drug development.

The Annual PhD Conference in Biomedical Sciences 2024 is approaching

This year, the Biology Department is traditionally organizing the Annual PhD Conference in Biomedical Sciences, which will take place on the 6th-8th of November at the University Campus in Brno. More than 50 PhD students from various departments of the Faculty of Medicine MU, CEITEC MU and FNUSA-ICRC will present the results of their dissertations in the field of Biomedicine.

Dr. Pavel Krejčí received an extraordinary award from the chairman of the AZV CR

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Agency for Health Research of the Czech Republic (AZV ČR), its chairman Ondřej Slabý awarded special prizes to nine scientists, the main areas of which were chosen as the most successful during the entire existence of the agency. The laureates include Dr. Pavel Krejčí for the project Identification of new treatment options for achondroplasia through the analysis of the interaction between FGFR3 and the adapter protein Frs2.

Guests of the June Breakfast with a Scientist were Mr. and Mrs. Bešše

On June 25th, the last pre-vacation Breakfast with a scientist took place. The invitation was accepted by a lovely married couple of researchers, Lenka and Andrej Bešše, who shared their fascinating story of their trip to Switzerland and back to the Czech Republic and offered valuable insights from their careers in medical research.
