About department

Department of Biology is one of the oldest theoretical departments at Masaryk University. It was established in 1919. The first chair of the Department Edward Babák is an author of the General Biology teaching concept for all medical faculties. Currently, the Department provides both theoretical and practical education of Medical Biology for Czech and International students. As a centre of excellent international biomedical research it also coordinates a PhD school in Biomedical Sciences.

Department of Biology at MU Faculty of Medicine Completes Its First ISAB Evaluation

The Department of Biology at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University hosted its first-ever external evaluation by the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) on 11–12 March. During the two-day visit, leading international experts assessed the quality of the institute’s scientific activities, met with research group leaders and faculty management, and provided independent feedback that will be important for the institute’s future strategic development and for strengthening its international competitiveness.

Prof. Ondřej Slabý received the Academician of the Year 2026 Award again

Prof. Ondřej Slabý, Head of the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University, has received the Academician of the Year 2026 award, which he has also been awarded in the past. This prestigious prize is presented annually by students of the Faculty of Medicine to teachers who have impressed them the most through their approach to teaching, expertise, and support of students during their studies.

The first meeting of the new International Scientific Advisory Board took place at the Department of Biology

In January, the newly established International Scientific Advisory Board of the Department of Biology held its first online meeting. Composed of five renowned international scientists, this advisory body will play a key role in the regular evaluation of the department and its research teams, helping to maintain the highest standards of scientific excellence.

Scientists of the Biology department succeeded in AZV ČR and GAČR Grant Calls

In the latest grant calls of the Czech Health Research Council (AZV ČR) and the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR) for 2026, a total of eight projects by researchers from the Biology department, Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, were supported.
