Nicola Silva has long focused his research on the inheritance of chromosomes from one generation to the next, with an emphasis on the meiotic phase during which sex cells are formed. At the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University, he discovered a protein that regulates the formation of the so-called synaptonemal complex—a protein “zipper” that plays a key role in stabilizing chromosome pairing. Its discovery, published in the journal Nature Communications, provides a remarkable lead for scientists studying infertility.
